An essential event for understanding Modiss's idiosyncrasy today is the Hanover International Exhibition of 1996. There Mediterranean style came face to face with Central European designs, and the colder north won the first round. This instructive experience channelled Modiss's unique design philosophy, one that is both elegant and synthetic and capable of combining the best of two at first sight contradictory ways of approaching applied art; this can be seen in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 catalogues which show an evolution towards essences which omits trivial components. The enormous success of Modiss lights at domestic and international Fairs and Shows has enabled the company to grow, calling for ever larger installations culminating in the move to its current locations: a 1500m2 office space and show room facility in Poblenou, the artistic heart of Barcelona, and another 3200m2 production and storage hub in the strategic logistical location of Martorell.
Modiss's history goes back to 1994, the year when Alfonso Fontal entered lights he'd made while studying Industrial Design for the Primavera del Diseño competition. Somewhat to his surprise (but not, however, to that of people who knew about his talent) his work was selected for display in Barcelona's Palau de la Virreina. This public recognition prompted Alfonso to make his first lights with mirror and stand accessories using craft techniques, lights which were launched onto the market at the International Lighting Fair. Although the stand he had there was small, its success exceeded all expectations so he decided to set up a team of enthusiastic young professionals who joined forces to found Modiss Iluminación, S.L. and make it into an industry benchmark. By April 1995 the first goal had been achieved.
Over the years Modiss has put in place a stable policy of expanding and modernising its processes which means that it can be optimistic about the future. Its increasingly significant presence at industry events and the interest its products generate among both professionals and consumers serve to support its firm commitment to exclusive designs, quality and service. Likewise Modiss's turnover, market penetration rates and numbers show that in spite of the international economic slowdown it has chosen the right approach and is making serious headway.
