The most interesting new designs are developed by young designers who are free from the restrictions of the market. The belief that it is possible to realise your own ideas and that your surroundings and society can be changed has long been the catalyst for innovation. However, entry to a market which is full of ”design classics“ and big names is not easy, and many a design icon seems to provide a major obstacle. One way out is to experiment with new materials and production techniques, and the identification of new lifestyle habits. Equally helpful is a knowledge of the mechanisms of marketing and the press. In this way many designers manage to rise above the flood of new products and innovations which every year fill to bursting point the exhibition halls of Cologne, Milan, Paris, Stockholm, London, …, … , accompanied by massive advertising.
