Charles Bessard, Master of Excellence in Architecture

(1971, France) received the Master of Excellence in Architecture in 2002 from the Berlage Institute, Postgraduate Laboratory of Architecture, in Rotterdam and graduated with honors as an architect in 1993 at the Ecole Speciale d’Architecture in Paris.
From 1993 to 1997 he worked in several practices in Paris including Bodin and Associate where he was the project leader for the Heritage Media library part of the Trocadero refurbishment in Paris. During the years 1997-2000 Charles Bessard worked in London at Sheppard Robson Architects as a lead designer on several large scale projects in London. From 2002 to 2004 Charles Bessard worked at Atelier Jean Nouvel on the Denmark Radio Concert hall in Ørestad where he was leading the design and the realization of the facades.

Nanne de Ru, Master of Excellence in Architecture

(1976, the Netherlands) received the Master of Excellence in Architecture in 2002 from the Berlage Institute, Postgraduate Laboratory of Architecture, in Rotterdam and received a Bachelor of Architectural engineering from the Hogeschool van Amsterdam in 1998 and won the Vitae Bouwaward for best Dutch Architectural Engineering graduation project in 1999.
From 1998 to 1999 Nanne de Ru worked as a project leader at One Architecture in Amsterdam. During the years 2002-2004 Nanne de Ru worked at Rem Koolhaas' AMO/OMA in Rotterdam as a lead researcher and designer on numerous large scale regional planning projects including: Ruhrgebiet a study for a new identity for the Ruhrvalley in Germany, Eurocore, a study into new forms of urbanity in Europe, Beijing Olympic conference center competition, Beijing preservation strategies, and The image of Europe, Study and exhibition on the image of Europe, a joint commission of the Dutch presidency and the European Commission.


Powerhouse Company was founded by Charles Bessard and Nanne de Ru in the beginning of 2005 simultaneously in Rotterdam and Copenhagen. It was founded consciously as a European office. Commissions range from furniture design to architecture, planning and research. Powerhouse Company works internationally on projects in the Netherlands, Denmark, France, Russia and Thailand. Since 2005 Charles Bessard and Nanne de Ru have been guest professors at: the Royal Art Academy of Copenhagen (DK), Aarhus University (DK), TU Delft (NL), Design Academy Eindhoven (NL), Academy van Bouwkunst Rotterdam (NL) University of Aalborg (DK), AHO Oslo School of Architecture (NO) and The Icelandic Academy of the Arts (ICE). In 2009 Charles Bessard will start a research and design PhD at the Royal Art Academy of Copenhagen, that will research the consequences of the rising sea-water levels on the urbanization of Denmark.

Work of Powerhouse Company has been exhibited in amongst others at the 2005 Rotterdam Architecture Biennale, The 8th Sao Paulo Biennale of architecture and the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam. Powerhouse Company has been published in amongst others Domus, A+U, Mark Magazine, A10 and de Architect.

In 2008 Powerhouse Company has been awarded the Dutch Design Award 2008 for the category 'best private interior design'. the AM/NAi prize for the best building by architects under 40 and the Prix Speciale for best office of Ecole Superieur d’Architecture in Paris. The office was shortlisted for the prestigious Mies van der Rohe Award 2009 and the Marcus Prize of Milwaukee Univercity, US.

2008 - Winner Prix Speciale d'Architecture - Ecole Speciale d'Architecture a Paris

2008 - Nomination Mies van der Rohe Award - European Award for best building in Europe

2008 - Winner AM / NAi Award 2007-2008 - bi-annual award for best building by architect under 40.
