Axel Nieberg, Dipl. Architekt

Axel Nieberg was born in 1968 in Hildesheim. He studied architecture at the University of Hannover and in 1995 was awarded his diploma with Prof. Peter P. Schweger. In 2000, he opened his own studio in central Hannover. The studio has a history of housing artists. Built by George V in 1858 for his court painter, Friedrich Kaulbach, the 4.5 m high room have since been used by artists, musicians and composers such as Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann and Anton Rubinstein. Nieberg’s affinity to historical architecture and traditional simplicity is also found in the atmospherically lit studio. In autumn 2001, he was invited to the renowned international workshop ‘Radical City Visions’ at the University of Hannover. In autumn 2005 an extensive monograph about Nieberg in the Junius Verlag Hamburg was published under the title ‘Sublime creation‘. The book published by the well-known architectural journalist Ulf Meyer shows Niebergs entire portfolio of architecture, interior design, product design and works of art. In 2006, he received an award from the Bund Deutscher Architekten for a house in Lehrte. In August 2007, Axel Nieberg was named, by the renowned English periodical WALLPAPER, under ‘101 of the world’s most exciting new architects’. In the same year, Nieberg’s kitchen design for a villa in Hamburg was chosen by the periodical ‘HÄUSER’ and the Company Gaggenau under the best Kitchens of 2007. In 2008, his design for a redevelopment of a villa in Hamburg and a house in Lehrte were commended by the XELLA Award ‘Bauen im Bestand’. The periodical ‘HÄUSER’ chose him as one of the ‘100 best architects of detached houses’ in 2008.

Philosophy

Slow down architecture

Our architecture distinguishes itself by a traditional simplicity. The used motifs as rows of elements and repetition are derived from historical buildings. This methodology shows the minimalist conceptual approach and the claim to be timeless. Architects have a high responsibility for a sustainable design of the buildings. That means the renunciation of modern accessories and fashionable trends. In these fast moving times we want to create rooms of silence. Slowness as a claim of quality.
Good architecture is defined by what it radiates; by the atmosphere and the materiality it creates. It is about the search for massiveness, not for lightness. The selection of materials is therefore always a step that must take place at the start of every design. Natural, matt materials and surfaces were preferred because they do not strain the eye of the observer and minimise reflections. We always use solid and simple materials with a tactile quality and a highly expressive radiance. It is this quality we see in the demonstration of workmanship, production and treatment. We do not see materials as something static, rather as something variable. The process of ageing and accumulation of patina is for us, in the sense of the Japanese Wabi-teaching, a quality increase. The patina of the materials intensifies their natural aura and gives us the expression to the power of resistance to the ordinariness.
In spite of their abstract and minimalist aesthetics, the rooms convey in their traditional simplicity a warm atmosphere. The visual effect and the experience of our rooms are defined by the light, proportions and materials. It is the fascination of sensing the rooms we have imagined with their atmosphere and their sensual expression. To experience this, it is necessary to take some time and let the atmosphere just act.
