Andy Martin, Architect

Andy Martin was born in Sydney, Australia. He studied architecture at the University of Technology, and completed his training at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, after which he worked with Will Alsop in London. On his return to Australia he started a small practice in Sydney in 1989 where he completed his first of many residential commissions. Martin moved to Paris in 1992 where he met and begun working with Marc Newson on architectural projects. It was through this partnership and these collaborations on Coast restaurant London, and Mash & Air Manchester, that Martin developed his interest in restaurant design. Martin’s client on these projects was the restaurateur Oliver Peyton. Striking up a relationship with Peyton, Martin was appointed the Architect for the flagship Mash 02 restaurant in London, which went on to be a critical success, published throughout the world, and enabled the practice to establish itself firmly at the forefront of innovative design.
In 1999 Martin was asked to design Isola restaurant after beating off the likes of Zaha Hadid and Christian Liaigre. This next major project undertaken showed the practice actively shape and change the U.K.’s bar and restaurant culture, through its refined, mature and yet still playful style. After the success of this restaurant he formed a new practice, Andy Martin Studio, in which he took on Director Tom Davies who came to the company as a Project Manager.
Since AMS was set up, Martin has actively moved his attention towards both public and private housing and has become renowned for some of the most ambitious solutions in London’s residential projects. His use of natural light, light and dark space and playfulness with materials have shown him to be at the forefront of the London movement. AMS continues to design both residential and restaurant projects around London and have been working on projects in Hong Kong and Greece. Andy lectures extensively on architecture and design, regularly serves as university studio critic, and is a board member for civic institutions and jury awards programs.

Andy Martin Studio is a new generation architecture practice. A young and dynamic practice blending youth with experience, and creativity with control. AMS takes a holistic approach to architecture. The studio incorporates architects, interior designers, furniture, lighting, and product designers. The design of all buildings, large or small, aims to become a "gesamtkunstwerk", a totally integrated work of art, with interior design, furnishings, equipment and selected artworks receiving equally dedicated attention to become a cohesive whole.

"Our mission at AMS is to carry out ambitious building projects at multiple scales and programmes, with a commitment to innovation, design and sustainability. We build within the city as if it is our own, and we are proud of the result and conscious of the effect that our buildings have on both the city around and the inhabitants within."
