After completing a foundation course in Fine Art, Alex Cochrane took a BA in Interior Design at Chelsea College of Art and obtained his AADipl in Architecture and Urbanism at the Architectural Association in London.
Before gaining his final examination in professional practice in 2005, Alex worked with a number of award winning and design-led practices. These included Pierre El-Khoury Architects in Beirut, de Paor Architects in Dublin (BD Young Architect of the Year, 2003) and Eldridge Smerin in London (Shortlisted for the Stirling Prize, 2002).
During this time, he received invaluable architectural, interior design, urban design and planning experience while working on a series of acclaimed and published projects. In 2006, Alex joined Paul Davis + Partners where became an Associate in 2007. He was Project Architect on a number of significant buildings including the refurbishment of Sotheby's New Bond Street complex and three of its galleries. Alex then designed the Sotheby's Rooftop Scheme, a new-build contemporary design-led structure that would float dramatically above the auctioneer's galleries allowing for an additional 400m2 of flexible gallery space.
In 2008, Alex left Paul Davis + Partners to start his own architectural practice, Alex Cochrane Architects. They have since received notable acclaim for a number of projects most notably The Boathouse in Windsor Great Park and very recently the Selfridges Mens Designer floor on Oxford Street in London.
