The Carson Pirie Scott building in Chicago, formerly Schlesinger and Mayer Department store, is one of the Sullivan's most notable buildings. Form, structure and ornament were tightly integrated into every design and part of Sullivan's mastery lies in the balance and harmony among these elements. Inspired by nature, many of his ornamental details hint at plant life and convey the energy and beauty of the growing organism.
