This monumental masterwork was the centerpiece of Nakashima’s last important commission; The International Paper Company headquarters in New York. The top, at over 12 feet 9 inches long, is comprised of two boards of that length. One board is about four inches across, the other board makes up the rest of the depth. Boards of this length are not only hard to find in good condition but also very difficult to work with because it takes precise handling to prevent warping. The most interesting visual element of this piece is the four sliding doors with elaborate joinery which create a decorative pattern inspired by the leaf of the Hemp plant. Known as asa-no-ha, this pattern calls for up to twelve precisely cut strips of cedar to be joined at the same point.
The back of the cabinet is completely finished to allow for use as a room divider. The interior is divided into shelves and drawers which makes for many possible functions. This cabinet is equally useful in a living room, dining room, bedroom or office.
