With its 5½ Tribute to Brancusi luminaire, OyLight is establishing a design line which gets to grips with the artistic legacy of major artists. The free-standing luminaire, with its repetitive shape and precision workmanship, is a captivating object.
Romanian-born French sculptor Constantin Brancusi’s artistic output concentrated on just a few themes, such as rest and movement, which he constantly reinterpreted in the Cubism style. The artist preferred simple shapes which he arrived at by paring down natural shapes. He considered these shapes to be an extremely concentrated form of expression and symbolically significant. Brancusi is one of the most important sculptors of modern times. His work had a profound influence on the modern concept of form in sculpture, painting and industrial design.
“This luminaire pays tribute to Brancusi, one of the most prominent figures in 20th-century art. The creativity of his module-form lies in its supreme naturalistic synthesis which, through its very repetitiveness, reinvented the space of sculpture. If we shift this vision to the world of industrial culture, we can see the profoundly dialectical role that art and industry have played in the development of our most recent modernity. This project is also the first in a series of "tributes" with which I intend to pay homage to the works of the great figures who have always inspired my work”, says designer Carlo Forcolini, discussing this design idea.

Brancusi’s endless column, which symbolises constant toing and froing, inspired the designer to create this luminaire. A complex production process ensures a high-quality finished product. The luminaire consists of five solid aluminium modules and a half-element which houses the light source. The solid elements are manufactured with a dimensional accuracy of a hundredth of a millimetre and fit into each other without any connector. The luminaire is a masterpiece which, in terms of craftsmanship, is comparable to works of art fashioned by hand. 5½ Tribute to Brancusi is a limited production run of 300 numbered and certified units.
