Living, dining and cooking – these elementary functions of an apartment are increasingly fusing together. In this process the kitchen is becoming the centre of the living area and must harmonise with the aesthetic of the room - a development which inspired the new k7 kitchen designed by Kai Stania for TEAM 7. With a formal and functional yet sensual design the kitchen uses its innovative technology to bring together the functions “cooking”, “dining” and “living”. The heart of the k7 kitchen is the kitchen block with its height-adjustable work top. This enables, on the one hand, a consistently ergonomic working environment. On the other hand, the levels of the work top chosen provide the kitchen with additional functionality. If the kitchen is not being used the lowered work top reduces its presence in the room. The kitchen block takes on the role of a sideboard and integrates itself into the living area without dominating the room. A cover for the sinks, retractable taps and a flat cooking area transform the work top optically in the living area. The door fronts of the kitchen block on the living area side add to this mood whereas drawers are provided on the cooking side.
Equipped with an electric motor and four hydraulic cylinders the work top can be raised from 74 cm to 114 cm by using a switch, either smoothly or in convenient programmable heights like “table height”, “cooking height” or “bar height”. The height of the work top determines the function of the kitchen. The whole kitchen block is formed without handles. The drawers are provided with an electronic (24 volt) touch sensitive surface (“servo drive”) which allows them to be opened by touch alone. TEAM 7 is the first company to provide this touch sensitive surface in solid wood - due to the shrinking behaviour of wood this function requires a high degree of technical know-how. Additional comfort is provided by the cushioned self-closing function of the drawers which are also fitted for the first time with a touch sensitive surface. The inset suspended handles made from stainless steel in the high cupboard with which two fronts can be simultaneously operated are also ingenious. k7 presents itself as functional and formal and gains its depth of expression from the exciting mixture of materials: high quality walnut, black-coloured glass fronts and quartz work tops, stainless steel - this combination creates a synthesis of nature and urbanity, of sensuality and strict functionality.
