In 1987, while working for Zumtobel, the milan-based design studio Sottsass Associati developed a luminaire which caused quite a stir both because of its design and its lighting technology – the
ID–S. The sleek lines and striking shape of its luminaire head made this free-standing uplight a movable room light classic. Thanks to its great versatility, the ID–S brought flexibility, mobility and
individuality into the world of upmarket office design. This classic among free-standing luminaires provides an agreeable, warm lighting scene thanks to a high individual light component and the
use of tungsten-halogen lamps. The adjustable reflector at the top of the luminaire makes it possible to direct the direct component of the light produced onto the working plane with pinpoint
accuracy.
As part of the Zumtobel Lighteriors Classic Collection, the unforgettable ID-S luminaire is at last available to end users. The decorative versions are a particular highlight of the Collection.
To exclusively mark the launch of Lighteriors, Zumtobel is mass producing a total of four decorative versions of the classic ID-S in memphis style for the first time ever. These versions were developed personally by Ettore Sottsass in 1995 on the occasion of the “Shadows” travelling exhibition which was staged internationally on the basis of the “Passages” special exhibition at the Cologne Furniture Fair in cooperation with Zumtobel. Sottsass, besides Michele de Lucci and Mattheo Thun, one of the co-founders of the memphis collective in the 80s, customised his free standing uplighter with diagonally offset grey stripes on a white background, a silver coloured body with a mint-coloured base and switch elements or a green body with a black base plate, luminaire head and switch strap. The Euroluce versions with a chrome or 24 carat gold-plated body are sensational eye-catchers.
