The Diana lamp and table were designed for the Barcelona Mayor's office during Pasqual Maragall's administration. They were intended to provide a touch of modernity without clashing with the classic setting. Federico Correa and Alfonso Milá returned to interior design when Mayor Maragall commissioned them to refurbish his office in the Town Hall. For the project, they enlisted the help of their former partner, the prolific designer Miguel Milá. This venture represented a return to their early co-operation when all three were just at the beginning of their careers.
A modern design was needed while eschewing anything which smacked of a passing fad. Elegance and a timeless quality were required which meant a radical break with the existing furnishings. Their approach was to remove uncomfortable and outdated furnishings, adding a limited number of new designs, including the Diana table and lamp, which are now produced by Santa & Cole.
The refurbishment of the Mayor's office struck a harmonious balance between tradition and modernity, technology and ambience. In the words of the designers's. It is as if the Mayor had blinked to find the room transformed into what he had always wanted it to be, while still retaining its defining qualities.
The table and lamp form an aesthetically pleasing pair of objects, giving a modern cast to traditional forms. They are both products of a rational approach in which the aim was to create a comfortable office which is a pleasure to work in.
The table is elegant and discreet. Its small size and unobtrusiveness make it the perfect complement for a sofa or as a stand-alone feature in reception areas. The table stem and base are made of the same nickel-plated metal as the lamp. The glass table surface is heat-glued to a small fixture which screws into the table stem. This provides a transparent coupling and facilitates disassembly. Four studs are located beneath the base for added stability. It would be difficult to think of a more fitting detail for the office of a Mayor renowned for his promotion of architecture and design.
