A comet transformed into a lamp, a flying light. The hanging lamp Cometa has put its stamp on a whole generation.
You can hang this flying lamp and adapt it to your particular taste. Contrary to what is normally the case with hanging lamps, the red cable hangs nearly to the floor.
The Cometa has a diffuser of white cloth in the shape of a kite, which hangs from the ceiling by a cable that supports the four parts of the frame. An inverted hammered aluminium cone hides the light bulb and functions as a reflector. The red cable hangs like the cord of a kite.
The prototype of the kite lamp was an inspired present. Charles Dillon worked on it all night to give it to his wife Jane the following morning.
As the lamp comes in the form of a kit, the user has to become part of its creation, approaching it like an enjoyable hobby, like putting together a real kite.
The lamp was designed in 1970s England, during the last years of Pop, out of which emerged alternative and radical design movements and others that experimented with a return to fine craftsmanship.
The Cometa is a high flying lamp which wakes the imagination, a comet of light, a parachute, an umbrella which projects a fine light and shadow.

The making of the Cometa
“It was a late summer evening in 1973. The angle poise light high above my head throwing light into our bedroom from the white ceiling. As I looked up I thought of a kite flying high in the sky with the sunlight reflected from its tense surface. Filled with this image I told Charles about the idea of making a light that captured the spirit of a kite.
The next morning, I was woken by a slight tap, he beckoned to our studio in the next room. There, made from our lengths of string, a torn white cotton sheet, an oil funnel, and two pieces of wood was the birth of the Cometa.
It was his brilliance, his humour to make a minimal structure with poetic genius twinning elegance and economy that the Cometa is here today for everyone.” Jane Dillon
