The GATCPAC lamp is a focus of indirect light with an adjustable shade, expressing the utility of machines for living. A worldly object made entirely of aluminium, it exudes a sense of history.
Opposed to nineteenth century decoration which was bent on destroying planes and breaking lines, Josep Torres Clavé was the driving force behind GATCPAC (Grup d’Arquitectes i Tècnics Catalans per al Progrés de l’Arquitectura Contemporània) and its post-war rationalism: standardisation, mass production, the importance of the group over the individual.
GATCPAC was the most active section of the GATEPAC (Grupo de Arquitectos y Técnicos Españoles para el Progreso de la Arquitectura Contemporánea), created in 1930 and promoted by Josep Lluís Sert and Fernando García Mercadal. The group’s main goal was to contribute to the advancement of a new architecture which could adapt to new times. It defended a revised rationalism, close to the style and machine-age aesthetic of the Bauhaus: “The machine has propelled us violently forward into the most intense stage of geometric development we have ever experienced“.
Conceived as a machine à illuminer, strikingly modern in its admirably pure and clean stripped down lines, this lamp for indirect light with its adjustable shade was used by various members of the GATCPAC in a variety of versions and for a full range of purposes, becoming one of the hallmarks of the group.
The bell-shaped shade points to the lamp’s function. An upper lever allows you to shift its position. With its ascetic, machine-age air, the GATCPAC lamp is a fine example of precision, rigour and clarity of design.
