A family of characters/lamps from the iconoclastic designer Javier Mariscal, as recognisable as the Garriris, created for the Gran Hotel Domine in Bilbao and apt for any home. With table, standard, hanging and wall-mounted versions.
One of Javier Mariscal’s favourite pastimes is to “surprise”. Perhaps that’s why the shape of this family of lamps is irregular, organic, asymmetric, unique and totally identifiable, like the Garriris or any of his creations. But the surprise comes within the surprise itself: its outline presents us with two faces, that which can be seen, one round and voluptuous face, and another that is functional. This flat face is the only uniform element in the white polythene diffusers. Javier Mariscal created the Dómine family of lamps for the Gran Hotel Dómine Bilbao, for whose interior decoration he is responsible.
The Dómine family consists of two table lamps, a hanging lamp, a standard lamp and a pair, as if they were shoes, of wall-mounted lamps for placing on the right and left. Fleeing from simple geometrical shapes, the hanging lamp consists of an elongated pisciform diffuser that hangs from the ceiling from its very centre.
The characters in this family are obviously the progeny of an author of whom it has been said that, “he admits to being a kind of blender in which Calder and Vasquez, Miró and Mickey Mouse, Matisse and Crumb are equally important”.
The Dómine standard lamp is a character sustained by a simple, straight platen that holds up its luminous white polyethylene belly. Its flat face can be seen clearly, the only concession to uniformity made by this family of absolutely free shapes.
But the surprise comes within the surprise itself: its outline presents us with two faces, that which can be seen, round and voluptuous, and another functional face that is hidden from us, following the flat surface of the wall. Although they can be used for diverse purposes, the two wall-mounted lamps have been created for each to light either side of a bed head, this being why one points left and the other right. The only difference between the two table lamp versions is their size. Like a tripod, they stand on satin nickel finish iron feet and are controlled by a pull-cord. One of the tubular feet houses the cable.
