Magistretti drew his inspiration for Caori from the expressive restraint of traditional Japanese tables. The table, lacquered in white with an aluminium tabletop, incorporates drawers and a central container into the structure, initially conceived as a cocktail cabinet, but that can also be used for a variety of other functions.

At a time when emerging industrialization valued quantity over quality, the Caori table appeared like a breath of fresh air. It established a link with traditionally crafted furniture yet, at the same time, offered in an innovative design that ventured beyond the prevailing paradigms.

Vico Magistretti has contributed, after more than 40 years in the field, to developing the quality hallmark of Italian furniture production by designing objects that are defined by their simplicity, subtlety, and elegance. The Caori table belongs to the realm of rational design, given its extreme formal simplicity and its flawless balance between form and function.

When viewed in context, be it in a living room or in a hotel lobby, Caori is more than simply harmony among volumes, proportions, shapes, and materials. It conveys something that was essential for Gavina, what he referred to as "poetic creativity", a particular sensibility that enabled those very shapes and materials to take on substance: that value which makes an object withstand conceptual wear and tear becomes timeless.

Magistretti takes traditional furniture and adapts it to contemporary uses. If we bear in mind the designer's idea that "being modern means acting like a chain with links stretching ahead towards the future on one end and embracing the past on the other", Caori emerges as both classical and modern, venturing forth into the future.
